About Midnight Terrors

Midnight Terrors is the game that me and Wilma have created in around 7 hours during the Taitaja event. After that I haven't touched the game in several months until I decided to actually make Midnight Terrors fun and interesting to play. That's why the duration of development is really tricky to calculate.

The event's theme was "Lights out" so we decided to make a 2D horror game where lights go out every 8 seconds. During that time the Shadows appear and they try to capture the player. If Susie gets caught - the game is over. Midnight Terrors is a top-down game where the player can move using WASD keys. The menu is always accessible by pressing Esc. In the future it'll also be possible to interact with objects by pressing F.

Future plans

Midnight Terros is still in the process of development. In the future new puzzles and objectives will be added, the story will be expanded.

Reviews

"I tried your demo and I would say that I can see why your game would seem a bit boring. The light-out mechanic even tho really cool and theme of the game should definitely be explored more.

Maybe there's something to do while the lights are on so in the dark you run and at light you complete objectives. The game would also benefit a lot with having at least some kind of interactions, now you just run and win if you get lucky with the enemy spawns tho I must add, since the enemy spawning happened only in dark it did feel quite fair which is good.

I feel like this kind of game would also benefit a lot from rewarding the exploration, since now you just went to the dead ends and won from a predefined room.

If you want to keep this current design you could also consider trying to get randomized maps to work to add replayability, but that is something that is hard to get right.
Hope my feedback helped and hope you keep on diving".

"I agree with the objectives thing. The map had a lot of drawers and bookshelves so maybe a system that could add that the key could be inside one of the drawers or maybe some story elements like notes and stuff would be hidden in the shelves that could explain for example the monsters, why the lights go out or something like that. For sound effects I really like the different sounds that are on there, something that also could probably be good would be some floor creaking sounds since it seems like an old house. Also a small question that came to mind when I started the game was "where are we", so instead of jumping straight to the game, a small explanation for why Susie is alone and why she has nightmares would be good".
